Our Cultural Work

Over the years, Day-Mer has built a reputation for providing a range of cultural activities and classes to the members of the community free of charge. These include the regular classes both for children and young people as well as adults, comprising dance groups, drama groups, music groups and a number of youth arts activities such as the street dance activities running over the recent period. With these and other classes running over the year, these activities culminate in regular showcasing events and contribution to social events organised regularly.

The major showcasing event Day-Mer runs which showcases the work over the year is Day-Mer’s Annual Culture and Arts Festival. The festival features activities for each of its service user groups with separate youth, women’s and children’s activity days as well as the Park in the Festival, organised in Clissold Park, N16 every summer. This festival is now one of the longest running festivals in North London and has an excellent profile as a regular feature of community’s cultural life.

As with all its activities, Day-Mer’s Culture and Arts offer respond to gaps for a community with well-documented issues accessing mainstream arts and culture provision; it brings people from Day-Mer’s target communities together with host and local communities and hence, contributes to community involvement and cohesion, challenges prejudices in between communities while providing a range of activities which improves the quality of life locally. This offer also enables the sustainability of cultural provision by providing structure to activities in which the community can participate as producers as well as an audience. And furthermore, as has been reinforced during the ongoing public health crisis, this provision also complements communities’ access to support networks and services while enhancing the impact of other services provided such as welfare services as progression route for service users.
